    Gates and Kinsey were measuring different things. Both were right. Gates was measuring identification as gay. That is a very different thing that what Kinsey was measuring. He was measuring the incidences of sexual acts. He ten per cent figure comes from his finding that approximately that many people have predominantly gay or lesbian sexual behaviors over a three-year period in their adult lives. It says nothing about how these people identify themselves. Many people who think of themselves as straight may have a predominance of sexual behaviors over a three-year period of their adult lives.
