The other day I posted a story about the “Christian Values Network” aka CGBG, a group which basically signs up a bunch of retailers and any purchase made through CVN a potion of the sale will go to one of the “charities” which has signed up with the group and a portion of the sale will go to CVN. The problem has been that some of the “charities” are really charities at all and are actually anti-gay and anti-woman right wing groups like Focus on the Family and officially recognized hate groups like the “Family Reserach Center”
There has been a growing concern about CVN and pressure has been applied to some of the retailers who signed up with them pointing out the fact that indeed money is being funneled to anti-gay and anti-woman groupd throught the CVN under the guise of charities. As of now both Apple and Microsoft has dropped the CVN app from its online stores and 50 major retialers have dropped out of the CVN network including Best Buy, Radio Shack, and others.
The CVN is obviouly not happy about this and has fired salvo’s back including a press release titled: CGBG corrects the record with ‘The 5 Mistruths by the Activists;’ Asks Retailers to Remain Neutral (which is basically a piece of spin and bullshit)in which they blame “activist gay bullys, but there’s been another darker side of retaliations happening including the threats of f lawsuits to the one independent blogger out there who has been working on this story and who has been hands on with CVG affiliated retailers getting them to drop out of the network.
Roy Steele a gay christian (the good kind of christian like the REAL ones) over at Tie-Die Jive in the (415) has been on the CVN (CGBG) story since its broken. He’s been a one man band calling each company involved one at a time. Other than the lawsuit threats from CVN he has also received numerous prank calls, harassment calls and death threats from “loving Christians” standing up for the CVN.
But Tie-die Jive in the (415) continues on and lets us know that there has been more than one company that has been resistant. Early in August Steele received a message from Target spokeswoman Jessica Carlson in response to his complaints, assuring him the company was looking “very seriously” into the matter. Shortly thereafter, according to Steele, Target was removed from the CVN list – only to reappear a few days later from dropping itself from the CVN list and that’s Target. (My is that shocking news)
The Bay Area Reporter contacted Jessica Carlson and she would offer no comment regarding Target’s stance on gay rights issues or its connection with CVN, then emailed a statement that read in part:
“Target believes in equality and does not discriminate. Through our Target.com affiliate program, Target partners with a variety of organizations that support a wide range of groups – including veterans, senior citizens, college students and religious organizations – through discounts and donations.”
But there is one company who said no explicitly. – and that’s HSN the Home Shopping Network. You see the new CEO of CVG/CGBG used to be the CEO of HSN. And since Steele has contacted HSN about leaving the CVG list he has received threats of lawsuits from CVG, crank calls and threatening messages, including an anonymous one telling him to “Die, faggot.”
But one of the most troublesome parts of this story to me is that Tie-die Jive has reached out to other LGBT bloggers about the boycott campaign, to counteract the CVN/CGBG threats and intimidation and his emails and press releases have fallen on deaf ears and I have to say I am shocked, dismayed, and more that a bit disgusted at my fellow bloggers for not picking up this story and being so self serving.. I won’t name names but you know who you are. Here we have a true LGBT activist and blogger reaching out for help and some of you have turned a deaf ear and ignored him. It is totally unacceptable and you should be ashamed.
I on the other hand will do all that i can to stand beside Roy Steele and Tie-die Jive to support him and do all that I can to expose the CVN/CGBC and help spread the word to boycott the companies that are staying on thier network list and thus supporting hate groups until they remove themselves from the netwok list.
We need MORE Bloggers and Activists like Roy Steele. Back2Stonewall.com salutes you.
