Transgender Woman Wants Drag Performers Banned From Gay Pride – Insensitve Or Is Politically Correct Going Too Far?

Rose White (pictured left), a  transgendered woman in the town of Halifax-Calderone Nova Scotia has called has written to councillors and the organizers of Calder-dale Pride in Halifax Nova Scotia asking them to ban or publish a disclaimer about “drag” acts because it promotes negative stereotypes about transsexuals and encourages hatred of those who have changed sex
According to White:

“Drag queens – homosexuals dressed as women – and drag kings, women dressed as men, performing as stereotypical crossdressers promote, foster and reinforce the belief among the audience that any bloke in a frock must be a homosexual.  The council needs to prevent anything that reinforces out-of-date stereotyping.  If these people are allowed to perform in the town in the Pride, they must have a prominent sign stating ‘We are homosexual men – not transexuals’.

Calder-dale Pride organizer Matt Gosridge has refused stating that event is organised to promote diversity.  “We wouldn’t ever want to attempt to restrict or control in any way the people that attend the event. Calderdale Pride is all about inclusivity and freedom of expression.”

Does Rose White have a point?  Or is she just being too PC or perhaps even  homophobic and transphobic herself?

That’s for minds greater and more learned in psychology then mine to decide.  But I do know until we all learn to embrace each other, twinkies, bears, men and women of color, leather men. clones, drag queens, drag kings, lesbians, transsexuals and so on and so on in our community we really do not have much to be proud about.

  1. Just to let you know, Rose’s comments were directed towards Calderdale Pride in Calderdale / Halifax, West Yorkshire, UK, and not Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
