Joe Biden says: "Gay Marriage Is Inevitable" – But The Important Question Is When?

Vice President Joe Biden appeared on The Today Show this morning and said that he agreed with the president’s “evolving” position on gay marriage and that a “national consensus” on the issue is inevitable.

“I think the country’s evolving,” he said. “And I think you’re going to see, you know, the next effort is probably going to be to deal with so called DOMA [Defence of Marriage Act].” DOMA prohibits federal government from recognising gay marriage, meaning that even if states allow the practice, gay couples still cannot access federal benefits. Mr Biden added that attitudes had changed to openly gay soldiers and that consensus was beginning to turn in favour of gay marriage. He said that gay troops were now “widely accepted” and “the same thing is happening now in regard to the issue of marriage.”

Here’s the thing.  We know that and always have.  With each new generation that comes into being homosexuality is more accepted.  Buts that’s not something we should have to wait for because really how many years or generations are we talking about here for gay marriage to be embraced and accepted?  5 years? 10 years? 30 years?  It took 17 years to repeal something as easy as the DADT Repeal should have been until the politicians mucked it up.  How long do you think it will take them to strike down DOMA?

This really isn’t an “evolving issue”.  Civil rights should never be treated as an “evolving issue” because some will never accept us and its morally wrong to treat it as such.  There were always people who had to be forced to accept back civil rights and recognize them and that will be the same scenario with LGBT rights including marriage.

While I do  appreciate that Biden and even Obama speak about gay marriage.  The talk of it being accepted in time is very open ended and it would be a travesty of older members of the LGBT Community that have been together many years never get the chance to be recognized as a married coupled just because they didn’t out live bigotry and homophobia.

We cannot wait for new generations to come and the older bigoted ones to die out.  That is just insane.

We need to fight, we need to push, and most of all we need a strategy to succeed.

No one should have to wait to be accepted.
